Commentary on Luke Part 5

Luke Chapters 17-20 (RSV)

Chapter 17

1And he said to his disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come! 2It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. 3Take heed to yourselves; if your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; 4and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, and says, 'I repent,' you must forgive him." 5The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" 6And the Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, 'Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. 7"Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and sit down at table'? 8Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? 9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'" 11On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Sama'ria and Galilee. 12And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." 14When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. 17Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" 19And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." 20Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; 21nor will they say, 'Lo, here it is!' or 'There!' for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you." 22And he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see it. 23And they will say to you, 'Lo, there!' or 'Lo, here!' Do not go, do not follow them. 24For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day. 25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. 27They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28Likewise as it was in the days of Lot--they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, 29but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all-- 30so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. 31On that day, let him who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away; and likewise let him who is in the field not turn back. 32Remember Lot's wife. 33Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35There will be two women grinding together; one will be taken and the other left." 36*[No text b] 37And they said to him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, "Where the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together."

[Footnote: b Other ancient authorities insert verse 36, “Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.”]

v. 5 (Mk. 11:23 n. 24 n). v. 6 Sycamine - mulberry.

vv. 7-10 Man’s relation to God makes obedience to God and His Laws a duty to be fulfilled and not an occasion for reward. The Law can never be done away.  Those that teach so will not enter the kingdom of God and the millennial system under Christ.

17:11-19 Jesus heals ten men with leprosy

vv. 20-21 It is in the midst of them.

v. 20 19:11; 21:7; Acts 1:6.

v. 21 The reality is among them now to be adopted. The questioners expected material benefits. However, the Pharisees had asked when the kingdom of God was coming.

17:22-37 The End of the Age

Mat. Ch. 24 has similar teachings in different order and settings (see the notes and links (F040v)). It is important that the study papers are referenced and studied in the links at F040v,

so also The Eternal Kingdom of God (No. 144).

The prophecies regarding the End of the Age are throughout the Bible. It is fundamental that God does nothing save that He warns the people through His servants the prophets (Amos 3:7). God provided for the Warning of the Last Days (No. 044) and made provision through the prophet Jeremiah for the voice of Dan-Ephraim (Jer. 4:15-27). It was this voice that the people expected as a prophet (001C), and thought that John the Baptist might be he, when they were asking if he were that prophet.  In John 1:21, they asked him if he were Elijah (2Kgs. 2:11; Mal. 4:5). He said no!

(However, Christ later ascribed this role to him in spirit (Mat. 11:14 n; Mk. 9:13 n)), nor was he the prophet (of Dan-Ephraim in Jer. 4:15-27; see also Jn. 6:14; 7:40; see Deut. 18:15 also in regard to the role prior to Messiah at the end of the Age). In John 1:24 the Pharisees then asked John, if he were not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet (of Dan-Ephraim) then why was he baptising? The sequence of the Last Days at the End of the Age was to see the Final Voice of Prophecy in the Churches of God. This was the voice of Dan-Ephraim giving the Warning of the Last Days (No. 044) over the period of the last forty years, from 1987, of Measuring the Temple (No. 137) (Rev. 11:1-2 (F066iii), to the 120th Jubilee year of 2027 at the end of the Age of the 6000 years or 120 Jubilees of Satan’s Rule, from the closure of Eden in 3974 BCE (No. 246, 248) for the beginning of the Millennial, or One Thousand  Year, Sabbath Rule of Christ from 2028 CE to the 140th Jubilee in 3027 CE in accordance with God’s Calendar (No. 156) as detailed in prophecy (see Sign of Jonah...(No. 013) and Completion of the Sign of Jonah (No. 013B)).

v. 23 The Coming of the Son of Man

As we see in this section in 17:20-37, it was the coming of the Son of Man, as King Messiah, about which they were really asking. They really did not fully understand that the Atonement sequence foretold the two advents of the Messiah as Priest Messiah of Aaron and the King Messiah of Israel at the End of the Age (see Atonement (No. 138) and Azazel and Atonement (No. 241)).

The prophets have foretold the Wars of the End and the Empires of the Beast (cf. The Fall of Egypt (No. 036) and Part II: No. 036_2) and Daniel (F027ii, xi, xii, xiii)). Isaiah must be read to understand the Gospels and also to understand the End of the Age and the millennial system of Messiah along with Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, So also the 12 Prophets (No. 021), F028-F039 detail the restoration of the last days and the millennial rule of the Messiah (cf. Habakkuk (F035), Haggai (F037), and Zechariah (F038)).

The sequence of the wars and the last six jubilees show the unfolding of the last two empires of Daniel Ch 2 of the Feet of Iron and Miry Clay of the Holy Roman Empire and the Globalist Empire of the Ten Toes of Iron and Miry Clay (F027ii) see also No. 299A).

After the wars of the end, foretold in Revelation chapter 6 (F066ii) at the opening of the seals on to the Revelation 16 (F066iv) to the war of the Sixth Trumpet and the fall of the Great Whore of the Mystery and Sun Cults (No. 299B), the end comes.

Christ said that we will not have finished fleeing through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes (Mat. 10:23 and notes F040ii). This persecution covers the religious persecutions (Rev. 6:9-11 (F066ii); No. 122; 170; F044vii) and the wars to the end (No. 141C); and is not limited to Palestine, as Israel was far to the north among the Hittite Celts by then and was to be moved into NW Europe within the next two centuries, with the fall of the Parthian Empire (Israel (No. 212F); (No. 122D) (cf. also No. 194, 194B).

v. 24

The Witnesses, Enoch and Elijah, (see Gen. 5:21-24; Mal. 4:5), detailed in Revelation 11:3-13, then take up station and restore all things for 1260 Days (No. 135; 141D; F066iii). At the end of 1260 Days they are killed, and on the morning of the fourth day, as their dead bodies lie in the streets, Messiah comes in power to take over the world at Jerusalem (No. 210A, 210B; 141D). Messiah and the Host fight the Battle of Armageddon (141E) and the world fights against him and the Loyal Host (141E_2) .

After the Witnesses (Rev. 11:3ff and No. 141D), The Coming or Advent will be sudden and visible to all.

v. 25 9:22;

vv. 26-27 Mat. 24:37-39; Gen. 6:5-8; 7:6-24.

vv. 28-30; Gen. 18:16-19:28.

v. 31 Mat. 24:17-18; Mk. 13:15-16; Lk. 21:21.

v. 32 Gen. 19:26; v. 33 Mat. 10:38 n, 39.

This event will also be the First Resurrection (No. 143A) of the Saints (see also The Valley of Dry Bones (No. 234)) who will be resurrected and then all go to Jerusalem (1Thes. 4:15 (F052). Then the millennial system will be established.

17:34-35 Mat. 24:40-41.

v. 37 Mat. 24:28 Jesus’ answer is an appeal to faith. The questioners wish to know where the Messiah and his followers will be located.  Messiah’s answer is a warning that, as surely as vultures find the carcass, so will divine judgment come, therefore, always be ready.

This text is never expanded or explained in the modern Bibles as the Mystery and Sun Cults wish to disguise the Bible structure and the Plan of Salvation (No. 001A), as their system will be destroyed at the end of the Age and will not go into the Millennium (F066v).

The Bible prophets also deal with the restoration and the Second Exodus at the rule of Messiah. The nations shall be restored, and from all nations the brethren of the nation of Israel shall be brought again to Israel as an offering to the Lord at Jerusalem (Isa. 66:20) and some will be for priests and for Levites and they shall remain and God will establish the law and the worship of God at Jerusalem and all flesh shall worship God from New Moon to New moon and From Sabbath to Sabbath (Isa. 66:21-23). Those that rebel against God and His law and the New Moons and Sabbaths will die and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh. So also will all nations keep the Calendar of God (No. 156) and the Feasts of God or they will get no rain in due season and die of the plagues of Egypt (Zech 14:16-21). This is Scripture and Scripture cannot be broken (Jn. 10:34-36). These texts are also never mentioned in the modern Bible commentaries by those who adopt the festivals of the Mystery and Sun Cults. Look also at the text Israel as the Vineyard of God (No. 001C).

Chapter 18

1And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; 3and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, 'Vindicate me against my adversary.' 4For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God nor regard man, 5yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.'" 6And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?" 9He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: 10"Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' 13But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." 15Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16But Jesus called them to him, saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." 18And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 19And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'" 21And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." 22And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 23But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. 24Jesus looking at him said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 26Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" 27But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." 28And Peter said, "Lo, we have left our homes and followed you." 29And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there is no man who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not receive manifold more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life." 31And taking the twelve, he said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written of the Son of man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32For he will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon; 33they will scourge him and kill him, and on the third day he will rise." 34But they understood none of these things; this saying was hid from them, and they did not grasp what was said. 35As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; 36and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. 37They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." 38And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" 39And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 40And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, 41"What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." 42And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." 43And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Intent of Chapter 18

vv. 1-8 Jesus tells the parable of The Unjust Judge and the persistent widow

v. 1 The point is carefully stated (see 11:5-8), perhaps because the details are incongruous (as in 16:1-9) (see n. Oxf. RSV). v. 7 Rev. 6:10; (F066ii); Mat. 24:22; Rom. 8:33; Col. 3:12; 2Tim. 2:10;   v. 8 Comes – From heaven, in judgment.  Faith is a requisite for this persistent prayer (v. 1).

18:9-14 Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector who prayed

v. 9 Righteous – they thought they were acceptable to God because of their ritual to God (vv. 11-12; see Mat. 5:20 n).

v. 11 Mat. 6:5; Mk. 11:25.

v. 12 Twice a week ritually 2nd day (Mondays) and 5th day of the week (Sabbaton) (i.e. Thursdays).

v. 14  Justified means accepted by God as correct. God receives those who implore His mercy rather than those who parade their perceived, or supposed, virtues (15:7).

18:15-19:27 From Galilee to Jerusalem

(Mat. 19:1-20:34; Mk. 10:1-52).

vv. 15-17 Jesus blesses little children (Mat. 19:13-15; 18:3; Mk. 10:13-16).

vv. 16-17 God’s kingdom is shared by those who depend, in trustful simplicity, on God, as on a father.

vv. 18-30 Jesus speaks to the Rich Young Man (Mat. 19:16-30; Mk. 19:17-31).

v. 18 10:25. v. 20 Mat. 19:18 n. The order of the Commandments follows the LXX in the Greek which was the Bible of the church and especially with Luke. v. 22 See 12:33 n.  v. 25 Mk. 10:25 n.

v. 26 to be saved means to have one’s sins forgiven and inherit Eternal Life (No. 133) (v. 18; Jn. 17:3-5) in the Kingdom of God (v. 25). The rich man suffered a personal lack notwithstanding his opportunity, because of that wealth, to fulfil the ritual requirements. v. 27 Gen. 18:14; Job 42:2; Jer. 32:17; Lk. 1:37. v. 28 5:1-11.

Chapter 19

1He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2And there was a man named Zacchae'us; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. 3And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. 4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchae'us, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." 6So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. 7And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." 8And Zacchae'us stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." 9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost." 11As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return. 13Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, 'Trade with these till I come.' 14But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' 15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading. 16The first came before him, saying, 'Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.' 17And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' 18And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your pound has made five pounds.' 19And he said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.' 20Then another came, saying, 'Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin; 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.' 22He said to him, 'I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?' 24And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.' 25(And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten pounds!') 26'I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'" 28And when he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29When he drew near to Beth'phage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30saying, "Go into the village opposite, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat; untie it and bring it here. 31If any one asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' you shall say this, 'The Lord has need of it.'" 32So those who were sent went away and found it as he had told them. 33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" 34And they said, "The Lord has need of it." 35And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their garments on the colt they set Jesus upon it. 36And as he rode along, they spread their garments on the road. 37As he was now drawing near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" 39And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples." 40He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out." 41And when he drew near and saw the city he wept over it, 42saying, "Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. 43For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies will cast up a bank about you and surround you, and hem you in on every side, 44and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation." 45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46saying to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of robbers." 47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people sought to destroy him; 48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people hung upon his words.

Intent of Chapter 19

vv. 1-10 Jesus brings salvation to Zacchaeus

v. 1 Jericho was on a trade route and was an important customs centre. The chief tax collector was one who contracted for the right to collect revenues in the district. His neighbours thus despised him for sharing in the Roman domination   (v.7).

v. 8 Some think the giving was a forward promise, others consider it an ongoing practice. The penalty is that listed under Ex. 22:1; Lev. 6:5; Num. 5:6-7; the Law of God (L1).

v. 9 Salvation – in the kingdom of God, came with Jesus’ message and Zacchaeus’ response (17:20-21; see 18:26 n).

vv. 11-27 Parable of the pounds Jesus tells the parable of the king’s ten servants, compare the similar parable of the talents (Mat. 25:14-30; F040vi).

v. 11 9:51 n.; 13:22; 17:11; 18:31.

v. 12 parable of events

v. 13 Ten – only three are mentioned later

v. 17 16:10

v. 21 take up...lay down  considered to be a current proverbial expression for a grasping person.  v. 26 Mat. 13:12 n

v. 27 Though all are judged, only the hostile are punished.

19:28-23:56 The Week of the Death and Resurrection of Christ

(Mat. 21:1-27:66; Mk. 11:1-15:47)

This week was the crucial phase in the mission of the Christ and was to put an end to sin and false religion on the planet. It was to bring to an end the rule of Satan and usher in the millennial Sabbath of Christ. It was to bring the Completion of the Sign of Jonah (No. 013B). This was the only sign given to the church (No 013). The activities of this week are important and have been attacked by the demons from the very beginning and the festival of the goddess Easter or Ishtar was introduced to the church at Rome from 154-192 CE. The dates of the death and resurrection of Christ were changed from the Passover of 30 CE from the original Wednesday 5 April to end Sabbath 8 April 30 CE to the death sequence of the god Attis, with a Friday death to a Sunday resurrection. That timing does not comply with the Sign of Jonah above. See the Timing of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection (No. 159). Over time these Sun and Mystery Cults introduced the Equilateral Sun Cross of Attis into Christianity (The Cross: its Origin and Significance (No. 039)) along with the Babylonian fertility cults with their rabbits and eggs and other blasphemous idolatry. The festival of the birth of the Sun god on 25 December did not enter Christianity until 375 CE from Syria. (Origins of Christmas and Easter (No. 235); The Quartodeciman Disputes (No. 277)). God will intervene and restore the Nexus of the Law with the Witnesses (No. 141D) and then send the Messiah and the Loyal Host (No. 141E); (No. 141E_2). Christ will then put and end to all False Religion (No. 141F) and End the Age (No. 141F_2). There will be no Antinomianism or false religion and no aspect of the Sun and Mystery cults and the Mother Goddess cults enter the millennial system under Christ (F066v). Understanding this rule of Law and Plan of Salvation (No. 001A) is critical to the survival of the individual.

The post Resurrection period is described in Forty Days Following Christ’s Resurrection (No. 159A).

19:43-44 Destruction of Jerusalem foretold.

In accordance with prophecy and the Sign of Jonah, Jerusalem was to be destroyed in 70 CE at the end of the Seventy Weeks of Years (Daniel 9:23-27 F027ix);  (see The Sign of Jonah and the History of the Reconstruction of the Temple (No. 013) + (No. 013B)). This was the only sign given to the faith and incorporated all prophecy. See also War with Rome and the Destruction of the Temple (No. 298).

vv. 45-48 Jesus clears the temple again (Mat. 21:12-17; Mk. 11:12-19).

(See Sanctification of the Temple of God (No. 241); Cleansing the Temple (No. 241B); Sanctification of the Simple and Erroneous (No. 291) (see also Sanctification of the Nations (No. 077)). The entire church kept the fast of 7 Abib with Christ (see Annex A  No. 291).

Chapter 20

1One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up 2and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority." 3He answered them, "I also will ask you a question; now tell me, 4Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?" 5And they discussed it with one another, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?' 6But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet." 7So they answered that they did not know whence it was. 8And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things." 9And he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country for a long while. 10When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 11And he sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12And he sent yet a third; this one they wounded and cast out. 13Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will respect him.' 14But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.' 15And they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "God forbid!" 17But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner'? 18Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but when it falls on any one it will crush him." 19The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people; for they perceived that he had told this parable against them. 20So they watched him, and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might take hold of what he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. 21They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. 22Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?" 23But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, 24"Show me a coin. Whose likeness and inscription has it?" They said, "Caesar's." 25He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." 26And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him by what he said; but marveling at his answer they were silent. 27There came to him some Sadducees, those who say that there is no resurrection, 28and they asked him a question, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the wife and raise up children for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and died without children; 30and the second 31and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32Afterward the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife." 34And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage; 35but those who are accounted worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36for they cannot die any more, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to him." 39And some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well." 40For they no longer dared to ask him any question. 41But he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is David's son? 42For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, 43till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet.' 44David thus calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" 45And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46"Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and love salutations in the market places and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

Intent of Chapter 20

vv. 1-8 Religious leaders challenge Jesus’ authority (Mat. 21:23-27; Mk. 11:27-33; Jn. 2:18-22). The religious authorities were the enemies of Christ in the Temple period. So it is today. See also Timeline of the Churches of God (F044vii); (No. 122); (No. 122D).

vv. 9-19 Jesus tells the Parable of the Vineyard and the wicked tenants (Mat. 21:33-46; Mk. 12:1-12).

v. 9 Isa. 5:1-7; Mat. 25:14 (see Israel as the Vineyard of God (No. 001C); Plan of Salvation (001A)).

v. 13 The use of beloved (not present in Mathew and Mark) identifies the son with Jesus.

v. 16 Acts13:46; 18:6; 28:28.

v. 17 Ps. 118:22-23; Acts 4:11; 1Pet. 2:7.

vv. 20-26 Pharisees question Jesus Re: Paying Taxes (Mat. 22:15-22; Mk. 12:13-17.

v. 20 Sincere in this text translates a Greek word that means correct according to the law. It is used here in the sense of false pretence (Mat. 23:28; Mk. 12:18-27). The texts try to distance Christ from the law of God except where that cannot be done, such as those regarding where it cannot pass away etc.

v. 25 Rom. 13:7; Lk. 23:2.

vv. 27-40 Sadducees question Jesus Re: Resurrection (Mat. 22:23-33; Mk. 12:18-27).

v. 27 Acts 4:1-2; 23:6-10

v. 28 Deut 25:5; Gen. 38:8

20:34-36 In this text Luke shows that the existence from the Resurrection (v. 36; Rom. 1:4) is to another form of existence, that does not involve marriage, being an androgynous existence, equal to the angels as sons of God (cf. Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:4-7, see City of God (No. 180)). (See also First Resurrection (No. 143A) and the Second Resurrection (No. 143B).) Those not awarded Spiritual Existence as Eternal Life (No. 133) face The Second Death (No. 143C).

v. 39 Mk. 12:28; v. 40 Mk. 12:34; Mat. 22:46.

20:41-44 Religious leaders cannot answer Jesus’ Question re David’s Son (Mat. 22:41-46; Mk. 12:35-37). v. 42 Pss. 45:6-7; 110:1; See Mat. 22:44 n. Heb. 1:8-9 (F058).

v. 44 The question is: How can the Messiah be David’s descendant if David calls him Lord. This also refers to the structure in Ps. 45:6-7 which is clearly identified in Heb. 1:8-9 as referring to the Messiah, who is David’s Elohim, and has himself an Elohim, or God. This text is avoided by the Trinitarians as it refutes the premise entirely (see Psalm 45 (No. 177); Psalm 110 (No. 178)).

20:45-47 On Pride and Humility Jesus warns against the Religious Leaders (Mat. 23:1-12; Mk. 12:37, 38-40).

v. 45 Mat. 23:1; Mk. 12:37. v. 46 Mat. 23:6; see Mk. 12:39 n; Lk. 11:43; 14:7-11.

These types as scribes and lawyers devour widow’s houses and these same unscrupulous scoundrels do the same to the widows in the Churches of God today through improper practices.
